Garlic mustard is an invasive herb native to Europe. It spreads quickly, interfering with the growth of other plants including several species at risk. While it is not a good food source for wildlife, it is high in vitamins A and C, and it makes great pesto. Join us to learn about the plant, how to safely pull it, and which native species compete well with it.
This year, after you pull the garlic mustard, you’ll be able to plant native species in its place. You’ll contribute to the health of the river bank, and leave with some ingredients for your very own delicious pesto!
Please bring your own containers! And a trowel if you have one. We’re working on getting power to the event, but you may need access to a blender later.
ALL WELCOME. This is an accessible, family-friendly event.
Brockville Avenue is located just East of Lyon Park. Go south off York Road to the end and you’ll see the trail and the Eramosa River. Please don’t drive unless you have to – these are residential streets and there isn’t a lot of parking. The #4 bus from downtown takes just a few minutes to get right to the end of Brockville, and you can also bike down the trail from the covered bridge.
Note that all participants will need to attend the introduction and quick workshop before starting to pull and plant. If you miss the one at 6:00pm, we will be repeating it at 6:30 and 7:00. This is important because pulling garlic mustard can do more harm than good if it isn’t done properly.
